CINEMATOGRAPHY

Good cinematography uses camera lighting, color scheme, and a variety of long shots to highlight the characters' actions and emotions, as well as close shots that help build tension. In Gandalf vs. Saruman's battle, LOTR does a good job of balancing long shots that show the fight in the context of the scene along with close-up shots that help build tension. The close shots also highlight the expressions of Gandalf and Saruman, giving the audience insight into what these two characters experience during the battle. Additionally, LOTR’s use of camera lighting in this scene with the dimly lit castle contrasted with the two characters in white not only creates suspense but also further highlights the emotions of Gandalf and Saruman.

LOTR also did a great job using forced perspective to accentuate the height difference between Gandalf and Biblio, a hobbit. The camera angles and shots give the audience an immersive feeling of what Gandalf is experiencing—being a giant in a tiny house.
